Bloom:
Deep pink to carmine-red.  Strong fragrance.  Average diameter 3".  Medium, semi-double (9-16 petals), cupped bloom form.  Once-blooming spring or summer.  
Habit:
Bushy, well-branched.  Matte foliage.  5 leaflets.  

Height: 3' to 5' (90 to 150cm).  Width: 3' (90cm).
Growing:
USDA zone 3b through 8b.  Can be used for cut flower or garden.  Shade tolerant.  Remove old canes and dead or diseased wood..  Prune after flowering is finished.

Early descriptions of the 'Red Rose' are usually of 'Officinalis' and not of the single-bloomed species.

DNA analysis has shown a close relationship between 'Officinalis' and 'Belle sans Flatterie'. - see References.

The Swedish Rose Society recommends R. gallica 'Officinalis' for northern Sweden.
